Draft Profile Series: Bruce Ellington

As we approach the deepest NFL Draft in recent memory, I’ll give my breakdown and analysis of 75 top prospects in this year’s class. At the conclusion of this series, I will include my final overall and positional rankings, as well as my mock draft.

Bruce Ellington, WR, 5-9½, 197, South Carolina
Key stats: Posted 49 receptions for 775 yards (15.8 ypc) and 8 TDs in 2013.
Strengths: Quick and tough, Ellington shows up when the Gamecocks needed a play. … Really competes and has a will to win. … Was the starting point guard at South Carolina in 2010-2012, which just adds to his leadership qualities. … Has soft but strong hands and picks the ball naturally. Good body control helps him make the difficult catch in traffic. … Runs with both agility and power.  … Can contribute as a returner on special teams.
Weaknesses: He’s short and doesn’t have elite speed. Has short arms for a receiver. … Needs some refinement in his route running.
Conclusion: I think Ellington is being underrated in the draft process. … I don’t hear his name much, but if you need a tough slot receiver, who can also help on special teams, there aren’t many better. … By all accounts is a model citizen and a high-character player. … As soon as he gets comfortable with the nuances of being an NFL slot receiver, Ellington will quickly contribute. … If he finds the right situation, I’d be surprised if he isn’t one of the better slot receivers in the league in a few seasons.
NFL comparison: Randall Cobb/Victor Cruz.
Draft projection: Third or fourth round.
