Draft Profile Series: Stephon Tuitt

As we approach the deepest NFL Draft in recent memory, I’ll give my breakdown and analysis of 75 top prospects in this year’s class. At the conclusion of this series, I will include my final overall and positional rankings, as well as my mock draft.

Stephon Tuitt, DT/DE, 6-5½, 304, Notre Dame
Key stats:
Had 96 tackles, 22 for loss and 19.5 sacks over the past two seasons.
Strengths: Big, strong and scheme diverse. … Either a 5-technique defensive end or 4-3 tackle. … Has good closing speed for a big man. … Sets edge well when playing end and really holds ground well in run game. … Anchors and locks out. … Has some pass rush ability, but is raw. … Packs a good initial punch and drive when he keeps his pad level down.
Weaknesses: Lacks initial quickness and has trouble getting his momentum restarted after he is engaged by blockers. … Sometimes loses ball when moving laterally along line of scrimmage. … Needs some counter moves. … Could finish plays better. … Effort is inconsistent. … Flashes dominance, then is invisible for long stretches. … Accepts being blocked at times. … Has some injury concerns and is coming off fractured foot.
Conclusion: Played better in Notre Dame’s magical season of 2012, but had a better supporting cast. … Tuitt will be a force against the run and has the speed to be a pass rusher if he can improve his repertoire and win early in the rush. My concern is his lack of initial quickness will allow offensive linemen to control him. … If he is dedicated to his craft and improves, should be valuable player in the league.
NFL comparison: Michael Brockers/Cory Redding.
Draft projection: Late first to second round.
