Draft Profile Series: Weston Richburg

As we approach the deepest NFL Draft in recent memory, I’ll give my breakdown and analysis of 75 top prospects in this year’s class. At the conclusion of this series, I will include my final overall and positional rankings, as well as a mock draft.

Weston Richburg, C, 6-3½, 300, Colorado State
Key stats:
Set school record with 50 career starts.
Strengths: Good athlete for the position. … Plays with good quickness and leverage. … Able to pull and is good in space. … Experienced and intelligent player that is in control. … Keeps head on swivel in pass protection. … Decent job of hand placement in pass protection. … Is almost always in correct position, and uses solid technique. … Does good job reaching 3-technique tackles. … Also aware enough to switch off in pass protection. … Has good feet for the position.
Weaknesses: Needs to add some strength and power. … Can get bullied by big, strong defensive linemen. … Has some trouble with power and sustaining blocks after initial contact. … Can do much better job sealing blocks away from the play. … Let’s too many guys slip off him and get in on play. … Doesn’t anchor well in pass protection, and occasionally gets pushed back into QBs lap.
Conclusion: Best suited for a zone-blocking scheme. … Has versatility to play guard if he adds the needed power. This is a pretty simple evaluation in my eyes. … Richburg is athletic and could become a very good player in the league. … However, unless he adds the strength and power necessary to handle powerful NFL defensive tackles, he’ll struggle.
NFL comparison: Ryan Kalil/Stefen Wisniewski.
Draft projection: Second or third round.
