Draft Profile Series: Lamarcus Joyner

As we approach the deepest NFL Draft in recent memory, I’ll give my breakdown and analysis of 75 top prospects in this year’s class. At the conclusion of this series, I will include my final overall and positional rankings, as well as a mock draft.

Lamarcus Joyner, S/CB, 5-8, 184, Florida State
Key stats:
Had 69 tackles, 7 for loss, 5.5 sacks, 2 interceptions, 4 passes defensed and 3 forced fumbles in 2013.
Strengths: Smart, tough, instinctive, physical, competitive and versatile. … Joyner was all over the field for the Seminoles, and it is difficult to tell what he does best. … Is solid in coverage. … Is a very good tackler. … Takes on blocks while coming up in the run game or while blitzing. … Has great timing as a blitzer. … Is adept at stripping ball carriers and quarterbacks. … Is a leader on the field and just one of those guys that seems to be in the right place at the right time.
Weaknesses: Only major weakness is his size – if you want to call it that. … There aren’t many 184-pound safeties in the league. … Will have to play as a third safety in sub packages or as a slot corner.
Conclusion: One of my favorite players to watch on film. … Joyner is just a football player. … He is extremely physical for his size and can do anything you ask defensively or on special teams. He has some limitations due to his size and with the way he throws his body around, injury has to be a concern. All you need to know about Joyner happened in one play against Idaho. … I urge you to watch it on youtube: www.youtube.com/watch?v=FJa2S3A1FMA … Every team would love to have a competitor like this guy.
NFL comparison: Antoine Winfield/Tim Jennings.
Draft projection: Second or third round.
