With the 28th Pick the Panthers Select: Kelvin Benjamin
- Updated: May 8, 2014
Why it Works: A hug Target. Benjamin is one of my favorite guys this year. extremely Raw but the upside is about Calvin Johnson Potential. Cam Newton is a happy camper now.
Draft Day Grade: A+
Kelvin Benjamin, WR, 6-5, 240, Florida St.
Key stats: Had 54 receptions for 1,011 yards (18.7 ypc) and 15 TDs in 2013.
Strengths: Huge, rangy and powerful wideout. … Really long arms and huge, strong hands. … Adjusts extremely well to passes over both shoulders. … Can go up and high-point passes, as he did for winning touchdown in the championship game against Auburn. … Has decent quickness, and gets off the line into his route faster than you’d expect from a 240-pounder. … Strong runner after the catch.
Weaknesses: Could do better job running through passes. … Leaves feet to securely cradle ball, but could run through for more yardage. … Has plenty of drops, usually due to trying to head upfield before he secures the ball. … Struggles with press coverage a bit, and will continue to do so in the NFL against stronger corners. … Needs to become better blocker, and give more effort when he isn’t the primary target. … Got away with grabbing and pulling himself past corners on deep routes. … Needs to keep weight down.
Conclusion: When watching Benjamin play, you see an inconsistent receiver that is a matchup nightmare for opposing defenses. … If Benjamin can keep in shape and work on his technique getting off press coverage and creating separation, he could have a solid NFL career and be a huge target in the scoring area. … If he puts on more weight and loses some of his quickness, he’ll struggle to be anything more than a target in the red zone.
NFL comparison: Plaxico Burress/Mike Williams (USC/Detroit Lions).
