Why it works: The Cowboys have needed an upgrade at guard. Protecting Tony Romo is Job 1 in Big D and it looks like the Notre Dame alumni will be cheering loudly in Dallas. I did want them to take a look at their secondary but it looks like a safe choice.
Draft Day Grade: B
Zack Martin, OT, 6-4, 308, Notre Dame
Key stats: Started 39 consecutive games; Notre Dame Offensive Lineman of Year (2011-13).
Strengths: Technically sound tackle, who also could be moved to guard. Does his job smoothly and effectively with proper technique. … Martin communicates well and aside from getting beat inside on occasion, really doesn’t waste a step. … He is very efficient with his movements and rarely is out of position. … Shows good knowledge of stunts, and is good at coming off blocks and getting his hands on a second defender when needed. … Is quicker than most think and is very durable. … Has leadership qualities and displays great knowledge of blitz schemes and overall defensive formations and tendencies.
Weaknesses: Pretty clean player from a weakness standpoint. … Not overly athletic, and has shorter arms than some of the massive tackles like Greg Robinson. … Could benefit from getting a little stronger to help his finish in run blocking and to hold up against power rushers at the next level.
Conclusion: Most project him to guard, but Martin can play tackle in the NFL as well. He doesn’t have the incredibly high upside that some in this class have, but his is a low-risk prospect. … Whether it’s at left tackle, right tackle or guard, Martin will come in and play from Day 1 and help his team for the next decade.
