Draft Profile Series: Scott Crichton

As we approach the deepest NFL Draft in recent memory, I’ll give my breakdown and analysis of 75 top prospects in this year’s class. At the conclusion of this series, I will include my final overall and positional rankings, as well as a mock draft.

Scott Crichton, DE, 6-3, 273, Oregon State
Key stats: Tallied 165 tackles, 51 for loss, 22.5 sacks and 10 forced fumbles in three seasons.
Strengths:
Big, strong and rangy end that also plays with a high motor. … Really plays hard from the snap until the whistle. … Is physical and enjoys the combat on every play. … Packs a good punch and is solid with his techniques. … Good hands, sheds linemen well, and pursues ball carrier. … Durable player that didn’t miss a game in three seasons.
Weaknesses:
Not overly quick or athletic. … Is an average pass rusher that gets there with effort, and is rarely able to win with speed or quickness. … Has short arms and can get locked up by good linemen and tight ends. … Can play too high on occasion. … Overruns plays and sometimes doesn’t break down in space. … Needs to play under more control in open field. … Average read and react skills. … Loses contain at times, usually due to falling for inside run action.
Conclusion:
Productive three-year starter for the Beavers. … I prefer him as a left defensive end in a 4-3, as I don’t see him able to bend around corner and flatten out as well as most elite right defensive ends. … If he adds strength and weight, could also fit as a 3-4 end. … High-motor players like Crichton usually find ways onto NFL rosters. … He will likely struggle early playing against NFL offensive tackles, but his determination and work ethic should allow him to improve over time and become a solid NFL starter.
NFL comparison: Wallace Gilberry/Charles Johnson.
Draft projection:
Second or third round.
