Draft Profile Series: Pierre Desir

As we approach the deepest NFL Draft in recent memory, I’ll give my breakdown and analysis of 75 top prospects in this year’s class. At the conclusion of this series, I will include my final overall and positional rankings, as well as a mock draft.

Pierre Desir, CB, 6-1, 200, Lindenwood
Key stats: Had 25 interceptions in his career.
Strengths: Great size for the position. … Has long arms and plays faster than his 40 time of 4.52. … Has good backpedal and break on ball. … Has good acceleration out of break. … Shows good instincts and ball skills. … At times looks as if he’s running the route better than the receiver. … Reads run/pass well.
Weaknesses: Level of competition didn’t consistently test him. … Was the best athlete on the field. … Not a physical tackler. … Grabs and swings players down. … Could still add some functional strength. … Doesn’t possess great hands and sometimes doesn’t track the ball accurately enough.
Conclusion: Desir has the natural ability to play in the NFL. … He’s long and has enough fluidity in his hips to someday start in the league. … Whether the jump in competition is too much for him – more mentally than physically – remains to be seen. … He will struggle early, and how he handles getting burned often in his first couple of seasons will likely be an indicator if Desir becomes a mainstay in the league, or has a short career.
NFL comparison: Xavier Rhodes/Byron Maxwell.
Draft projection: Third round.
