Draft Profile Series: Keith McGill

As we approach the deepest NFL Draft in recent memory, I’ll give my breakdown and analysis of 75 top prospects in this year’s class. At the conclusion of this series, I will include my final overall and positional rankings, as well as a mock draft.

Keith McGill, CB, 6-3½, 211, Utah
Key stats: Had 37 tackles, 12 passes defensed and an interception in 2013.
Strengths: Big, long athlete for the position. … Is an explosive athlete with great leaping ability. … Has good speed (4.5 40) for his size. … Does good job mirroring receivers. … Good recovery burst and has the long arms to go up and challenge long passes. … Was a mainstay on kick return (blocker) and kick coverage teams. … Reliable tackler.
Weaknesses: Plays a little high, which is understandable. … Doesn’t come out of backpedal as quickly as you’d like, and receivers are able to create separation. … Needs to get around or off blocks with more efficiency. … Seems to lack toughness. … Isn’t overly physical when coming up in run game. … Needs work on press technique, as he often turns parallel to sideline at snap. … Allows free release too often. … Loses technique in backpedal. … Inconsistent hands. … Only came up with one interception and had several missed opportunities. … Missed a lot of games due to injury.
Conclusion: If McGill learns proper press technique, he can definitely be a factor on Sundays. … I like him as a press corner that gets into receivers at the line of scrimmage, because he is able to turn, run and leap with the big receivers in the NFL. … On the other hand, I do not like him in off coverage, because the quicker wideouts will have a huge advantage in space. … What will eventually decide how he does is: whether he can remain durable? … and if he has the toughness/physicality to play in the league?
NFL comparison: Jimmy Smith/Ras-I Dowling.
Draft projection: Second or third round.
