Draft Profile Series: Jarvis Landry

As we approach the deepest NFL Draft in recent memory, I’ll give my breakdown and analysis of 75 top prospects in this year’s class. At the conclusion of this series, I will include my final overall and positional rankings, as well as a mock draft.

Jarvis Landry, WR, 5-11½, 205, LSU
Key stats: Had 77 receptions for 1,173 yards and 10 touchdowns in 2013.
Strengths: Despite his average size, Landry is a tough, physical player. … Doesn’t matter if he’s the primary receiver, blocking for the run, or helping his teammates extend runs into the secondary, Landry is giving maximum effort at all times. … Has good, strong hands. … Fights for 50-50 balls, and has the required body control to snatch passes while taking contact. … Good route runner. … Finds holes against zone coverage. … Is a physical runner after the catch. … A great blocker.
Weaknesses: Has only adequate straight-line speed and quickness. … Has trouble separating from the better cover corners. … Not quick enough to gain much separation when challenged at line of scrimmage or when coming out of breaks.
Conclusion: Landry is a hard-working, tough receiver that will find a way to help a team. … He has the ability to help as a slot receiver, and will likely have more success against zone schemes. … I’m not sure he can ever be an all-pro, but he has the skills to become a good possession receiver that could work his way to becoming a reliable No. 2 option. If not, I’m sure he’ll work his hardest to contribute as a No. 3 or 4 receiver while also contributing on special teams.
NFL comparison: Jason Avant/James Jones.
Draft projection: Third round.
