Draft Profile Series: Davante Adams

As we approach the deepest NFL Draft in recent memory, I’ll give my breakdown and analysis of 75 top prospects in this year’s class. At the conclusion of this series, I will include my final overall and positional rankings, as well as a mock draft.

Davante Adams, WR, 6-1, 212, Fresno State
Key stats: Led nation with 131 receptions and 24 touchdowns.
Strengths: Produced big numbers on a weekly basis for the Bulldogs. … Has good size for the position. … Very reliable hands. … Makes the contested catch, and has good timing to elevate to highpoint the ball. … Really tracks ball well in air and makes smooth adjustments. … Very good leaper and should be a threat in the red zone. … Willing blocker that plays hard.
Weaknesses: Is more of a possession receiver that doesn’t have ideal straight-line speed or quickness. … Played in wide-open spread attack that helped inflate his numbers. … Will have trouble separating from NFL cornerbacks. … Didn’t run many routes to the middle of the field. … Majority of routes were on the sideline and were either screens, out/hook patterns or 9 routes. … Not going to make many defenders miss. … Needs to add strength because teams will attempt to smother him at the line because they don’t fear his speed.
Conclusion: If Adams can adapt to a pro-style system and learn the intricacies of the NFL route tree, he should become a good No. 2 or 3 option in the league. … He certainly has deficiencies in his game, but receivers with his size and ball skills usually find a way to play in this league, especially considering the increased use of four-and five-receiver sets.
NFL comparison: Mile Austin/Marvin Jones.
Draft projection: Second round.
