Draft Profile Series: Jace Amaro

As we approach the deepest NFL Draft in recent memory, I’ll give my breakdown and analysis of 75 top prospects in this year’s class. At the conclusion of this series, I will include my final overall and positional rankings, as well as my mock draft.

Jace Amaro, TE, 6-5½, 265, Texas Tech
Key stats: Made 106 receptions for 1,352 yards and 7 touchdowns in 2013.
Strengths: Highly-productive player, who was used in a myriad of formations in Tech’s wide-open system. … Catches the ball well and has good overall size for the position. … Has good straight-ahead speed. … Willing blocker downfield against smaller defensive backs. … Locks out arms and drives. … Will drag smaller defenders after reception. … Has good feel for finding openings in zones. … Is strong at planting and breaking on shallow crosses and posts.
Weaknesses: A system player, many of his receptions are due to defenses not being able to match Tech’s multiple looks. … A move tight end that will not likely be used much in-line. … Isn’t overly physical in blocking. … Rarely gets his shoulders into blocks. … Doesn’t have great balance as a runner. … Not especially quick or elusive and could have real trouble if challenged at the line. … Doesn’t separate especially well.
Conclusion: Amaro is a tough projection. He had one of the best seasons for a tight end in history. On the other hand, much of it had to do with Texas Tech’s wide-open passing system that spread the field and overwhelmed most defenses. … Amaro is a pretty good, but not dynamic athlete, who will definitely play in the league. At what level is difficult to determine until we find out what system he goes to. … I see a good fit in Green Bay.
NFL comparison: Martellus Bennett/Zach Miller.
Draft projection: Rounds 2-3.
