Draft Profile Series: Tom Savage

As we approach the deepest NFL Draft in recent memory, I’ll give my breakdown and analysis of 75 top prospects in this year’s class. At the conclusion of this series, I will include my final overall and positional rankings, as well as my mock draft.

Tom Savage, QB, 6-4, 228, Pittsburgh
Key stats: Passed for 2,958 yards with 21 TDs and 9 interceptions.
Strengths: Big, strong-armed quarterback. … Takes care of the ball, keeping two hands on it until beginning his throwing motion. … Has strong arm and pretty solid fundamentals. … Is mobile enough and stands strong in the pocket while his eyes remain downfield. … Steps up in pocket very well. … Really flashes big-time potential. … Has poise in the pocket.
Weaknesses: Base gets too narrow at times and throws off balance without stepping toward target. … Much of his attack was on underneath throws. … Has strong arm, but would like to see more intermediate and deep throws into tight windows. … Accuracy is average, especially on deeper passes. … Needs to know when to put touch or zip on deeper throws. … Hangs passes when he should stick them in there … and vice versa.
Conclusion: Savage has taken a crazy road to becoming a relatively highly-ranked NFL prospect. He has transferred twice and didn’t play in either 2011 or 2012. … His stock has skyrocketed of late, and I’m always leery of guys whose stock rises when they haven’t played a game in five months. … But, after watching his tape, I came away very impressed. … Savage just needs more reps … period. … After a few seasons, he could be one of the better QBs to come out of this draft.
NFL comparison: Nick Foles/Matt Schaub.
Draft projection: Second or third round.
