Draft Profile Series: Ra’Shede Hageman

As we approach the deepest NFL Draft in recent memory, I’ll give my breakdown and analysis of 75 top prospects in this year’s class. At the conclusion of this series, I will include my final overall and positional rankings, as well as my mock draft.

Ra’Shede Hageman, DT/DE, 6-6, 310, Minnesota
Key stats: Had 38 tackles, 13 tackles for loss, two sacks and eight blocked passes in 2013.
Strengths:
Quick, strong and scheme-diverse player, who has a nasty streak. … Has very good speed and quickness for a 310-pounder. … Gets off ball well, and can win with power or quickness. … Can dominate when he plays with leverage … Blocks a lot of passes and has good timing and instincts for when to get his hands up, and when to continue rushing the QB. … Has a high ceiling due to his high-level physical traits. … Long arms allow him to lockout offensive linemen. Should improve with coaching and experience.
Weaknesses: Plays too high which results in getting driven off the ball too easily, or being prone to cut blocking. … Doesn’t display consistent technique, which leads to spotty results. … Sometimes doesn’t read blocking schemes and gets trapped too easily. … Needs to refine his pass rushing skills and come up with some counter moves when he gets stuffed. … If he doesn’t win early, has trouble disengaging from blocks.
Conclusion: Looks dominant for short spurts, and then gets dominated on the next series. He will very likely be drafted early due to his potential and scheme diversity. … Can play 5-technique defensive end; defensive tackle in a 4-3 and even possibly end in a 4-3 in certain situations. He lined up everywhere from over the nose to outside the tackle. If he learns to keep his pad level down, should blossom into a very good NFL player. If not, he will get pushed around and be a situational player.
NFL comparison: Jared Odrick/Tommy Kelly.
Draft projection: Late first or early-mid second.
