Draft Profile Series: Jason Verrett

As we approach the deepest NFL Draft in recent memory, I’ll give my breakdown and analysis of 75 top prospects in this year’s class. At the conclusion of this series, I will include my final overall and positional rankings, as well as a mock draft.

Jason Verrett, CB, 5-9½, 190, TCU
Key stats:
Had 8 interceptions and 36 passes defensed the past two seasons.
Strengths: Plays well both in press and off the ball, and has quick break out of his backpedal. … Physical, instinctive and anticipates well. … Closes well and really competes for the ball. … Doesn’t like giving up anything to receivers. … Excels in pressing and running with receivers. … For his height, he really challenges receivers for jump balls. … Plays with an edge and tackles well both in open field, and when he needs to come up and attack line of scrimmage.
Weaknesses:
He sometimes gives up inside leverage too easily. … Has had injury history, and combine that with the way he competes, health could be a worry for teams. … Is short, and at times will be out-manned against the biggest of receivers.
Conclusion: If Verrett was 6-foot he would be a definite top-15 pick. … Can play on the outside, but may make his start covering the slot. … I always bet on players like Verrett. I don’t care that he’s under 5-10. … He is just a football player, who consistently shows up on tape. … He’s always around the ball, and finds ways to impact the game in a positive manner. … Line him up out wide, or in the slot, and you have a corner who will compete for 60 minutes.
NFL comparison:
Brent Grimes.
Draft projection:
Late-first, early-second rounder.
