Draft Profile Series: Jared Abbrederis

As we approach the deepest NFL Draft in recent memory, I’ll give my breakdown and analysis of 75 top prospects in this year’s class. At the conclusion of this series, I will include my final overall and positional rankings, as well as a mock draft.

Jared Abbrederis, WR, 6-1, 195, Wisconsin
Key stats: Had 78 receptions for 1,081 yards and 9 total touchdowns in 2013.
Strengths: A very polished route runner, who knows how to change speeds and keep cornerbacks off balance. … Is technically sound, and knows how to find holes in zone coverage, while also using savvy to beat man-to-man coverage. … Is tough and competitive. … Has good one-cut ability as a runner. … Willing blocker who stalk blocks well. … Catches the ball well and has experience returning punts.
Weaknesses: Not a great athlete. … Average speed and quickness, and doesn’t have explosive leaping ability. … Must get stronger to better handle being pressed by big, strong NFL cornerbacks, as well as taking hits from linebackers and safeties. … Doesn’t possess elite elusiveness. … Allows too many passes to get into pads. … Has had concussions, which is always a concern when investing a draft pick on a player.
Conclusion: Each NFL team has a few overachievers in the mold of Abbrederis. … He is the type of intelligent route runner and competitor that usually finds a way onto a roster, possibly beginning as a member of a practice squad early in his career. … If he can get stronger, and improve his core explosiveness, he should eventually contribute and possibly be a solid starter. … He fits as an ‘X’ receiver, but could also see time in the slot.
NFL comparison: Brian Hartline/Tandon Doss.
Draft projection: Fourth round or later.
