Draft Profile Series: Demarcus Lawrence

As we approach the deepest NFL Draft in recent memory, I’ll give my breakdown and analysis of 75 top prospects in this year’s class. At the conclusion of this series, I will include my final overall and positional rankings, as well as my mock draft.

Demarcus Lawrence, DE, 6-2, 251, Boise State
Key stats
: Had 72 tackles, 25.5 for loss and 10.5 sacks in 2013.
Strengths: Despite his lack of bulk, is stout versus the run. Really plays with good pad level and hand placement to help drive and shed offensive linemen. … Locks out his long arms and anchors well. … Has a high motor and doesn’t quit on plays. … Disciplined player. … Reads plays well and is rarely caught over pursuing or getting out of position.
Weaknesses: Not a naturally gifted pass rusher due to a lack of initial quickness. Doesn’t have great closing speed. … Is a tweener; has the build of outside linebacker in 3-4, but skill set is that of a 4-3 defensive end. Will need to add weight and strength if he is to play as a down linemen in 4-3. … Will need a ton of work if asked to drop in coverage as a 3-4 OLB.
Conclusion: I think Lawrence is a player that will find a place on an NFL roster and will work his way into a role at some point. To maximize that ability, he will have to find the right fit. He is the type of player that could work into a rotation and develop into a starter at some point. He is a solid all-around player, but he’ll need to find the right scheme to allow him to develop.
NFL comparison: Jabaal Sheard/Junior Galette.
Draft projection: Late first to early third.
