Draft Profile Series: Vic Hampton

As we approach the deepest NFL Draft in recent memory, I’ll give my breakdown and analysis of 75 top prospects in this year’s class. At the conclusion of this series, I will include my final overall and positional rankings, as well as my mock draft.

Vic Hampton, CB, 5-9, 197, South Carolina:
Key stats:
Posted 51 tackles, three interceptions and eight passes defensed in 2013.
Strengths:
Hampton is a strong tackler, good blitzer and has great hands. .. He is physical and has good instincts for the position. A player like Hampton will find his way onto the field and make an impact. I think he will thrive as a slot cornerback, and has the ability to play on the outside due to his tenacity and football instincts. … Able to break quickly on passes and undercut routes. … Will come up and deliver blows in the running game and is an all-around good tackler. … Can be used as a safety or a blitzer due to his physicality.
Weaknesses: Needs to work on his technique and limit his freelancing. … He sometimes gets caught looking into the backfield too long and can be beat on double moves due to his aggression. Is short, and can have some trouble with taller receivers in the red zone.
Conclusion: Hampton is on my underrated list. There are only two reasons Hampton isn’t being considered as a top-tier corner: First, he’s had some issues off the field; and secondly, he is just 5-9. I think he is among the top corners in this deep class, but he will likely last until late Friday or early Saturday. Likely will be a core special-teamer early in his career, as well as a bargain for the team that drafts him.
NFL comparison: Asante Samuel/Captain Munnerlyn.
Draft projection: Likely to go between rounds 3-4.
