New Rule Changes for 2014

Here are some of the rule changes that will take effect in 2014:

My favorite, the goal post extension. I don’t understand who, besides Jimmy Graham, would not want this. This is the main reason the NFL will now be flagging for the goal post dunk. The 5 foot extension on each verticle post will make them top heavy, and he has already stopped 1 game to level the goal post, so dunking the ball could be dangerous (Sorry, Jim. I would still draft you, though).

The “Navorro Bowman rule”- Although it eventually played out better for the 49ers that they didn’t get it right, in the end you can’t allow that type of sheer stupidity to have the ability to change a championship game. This rule needed to be changed to take pressure off of the referees.

The game clock will now continue to run after a sack outside of 2 minutes. Makes sense to me; if your running back loses 5 yards on a hand-off, the clock doesn’t stop for that, so why should it matter when a QB gets tackled?

One of the hot button topics for the meeting was the ability to use replay for personal fouls. Apparently, the vote came with less than 50 percent of the head coaches, so obviously they will re-evaluate that one next season.

It doesn’t seem like the new rule changes will make that big of an effect on the game, so I’m fine with it, especialy if the game is being called correctly.
